You probably cannot remember ever walking into a house that did not have a throw rug somewhere. In front of a door, the kitchen sink or in a hallway, throw rugs just seem to add that extra touch of home to any interior. While many of us just look for a striking color or pattern there are many things to consider when purchasing an area rug. Looks are definitely important but resistance to wear and longevity are vital.

I doubt our area rugs will last as long as the Achaemenid Pazyryk Rug that holds the record as the oldest carpet in the world. The Achaemenid Empire was booming between 559 BC and 330 BC when this rug was thought to be made. Most people are satisfied if their throw rug stays presentable for even ten years.

Throw rugs are typically smaller than the area rugs that are used throughout the largest portion of the room. Throw rugs are used to pad an area which see a lot of foot traffic, such as in front of doors to catch debris from our shoes or just to highlight a spot that needs a dash of color. In choosing your throw rugs, you should consider the flow of color throughout your home and select rugs that flow harmoniously with the rest of your home’s décor.

Lighter colored area rugs bring a sense of spaciousness while the darker colors lend a cozy feel. The different fibers available in today’s area rugs are also important in choosing a tone for your room. A stain resistant rug in the kitchen works much better than one that is silky and shows every speck of dirt. 100% viscose that feels very silky is a perfect fit for a formal living area.

Many doormats have a rubber bottom and edges to preserve your entryway carpet, tile or wood from water and debris tracked in from outside. Choices in rectangular, square or half-moon are the most popular for not taking up a lot of space. Indoor/outdoor rugs made of polypropylene are also popular for keeping floors safe with colors and are available in a variety of attractive designs.

Synthetic area rugs are by far the most common and easy to care for. They are also far less expensive than hand-hooked, 100% wool or leather. Many manufacturers today even offer quality pieces that are hypoallergenic. A non-slip cushioned synthetic rug can look as elegant as one which is very expensive, perfect for an active family. Starting as low as $15, you can buy several to match the colors and theme in all of your rooms.

Area rugs are available from a variety of department and furniture stores. Unless you are looking for something truly unique, it is not hard to find an area rug close to your home but don’t forget about online stores that present the widest variety of area rugs right at your fingertips.
