    A braided rug is exactly as the name implies – the material used to make the rug is braided together until the desired shape and size has been achieved. They are an object of beauty, with the unmistakable warmth, richness of texture, and depth of color that only they can deliver. Around for almost 200 years, the braided rug was made by hand from braids that were sewn together and today they still exist as an alternative to carpets.

    A braided rug is commonly created from wool or nylon braided, using three strands of cord. But, some crafters have created braided rugs from socks, fabric scraps, and a whole host of other materials that prove to make the braided rug very unique. Some forms of braided rugs include a banded braid, cloth braid, a flat braid, and a yarn braid. The quality is determined by the tightness of the braid and the materials used. Braided rugs are made by using three or more strips of the chosen fabric, usually wool, folding the raw edges to the middle and braiding them together. For an oval rug the center braid should be one inch longer than the width-length in feet.

    These types of rugs can come in any size or color combination, and is available in many shapes such as round, oval, rectangle, and even heart-shaped. They are great for all areas and surfaces and are offered in assorted colors, styles and sizes.

They are versatile and can be used for anything from a focal point in a living room to a runner in a hall.

    These types of rugs are not only beautiful, but practical. They are noted for durability and for being soft to walk on because of their thickness. Because of their construction, they lend a homey, traditional look to a room and are favored sleeping spots for pampered family pets. They are very durable and can be used on hardwood floors, linoleum, tile or on wall to wall carpet. Braided rugs are also reversible which makes the life of the rug longer.

    The prices will vary according to the brand name, quality of fibers and weave, and the size or shape. Braided rugs are now a major player in upscale rustic decorating when paired with rustic iron or timber furniture. The colors of fabric braided into the rugs give the ability to add touches of black or rust to complement rustic iron furnishings or browns and grays to complement timber furniture.
